A substantial influx of campaign spending from the cryptocurrency sector is making a significant impact in Ohio's US Senate race, with industry-backed political action committees allocating $40 million to support Republican candidate Bernie Moreno in his bid against Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who has expressed skepticism about cryptocurrency. The latest Federal Election Commission filings reveal that Fairshake PAC and its affiliates, including Defend American Jobs, have far exceeded their initial $12 million commitment, with the majority of the funds being used for pro-Moreno advertising. This level of spending surpasses that of any other group in the race. Since Fairshake's involvement began last month, polls have shown a notable increase in support for Moreno, a businessman with ties to the blockchain industry.

According to recent polling data, Moreno may be gaining an edge over Brown, with one poll indicating a margin of 51% to 49% in his favor, although this result is subject to a margin of error of nearly 5%. A broader analysis of polling data also suggests steady gains for Moreno, with his support increasing by 2.3 percentage points since Fairshake entered the race. Some figures within the crypto industry have privately expressed discomfort with Fairshake's strategy, citing concerns that attempting to unseat Brown could ultimately harm the industry's legislative efforts.

Brown currently holds significant influence over the Senate's crypto agenda, and if he retains his seat, he will likely continue to shape the industry's regulatory landscape. The significant outside spending in the Ohio race is helping to bridge the gap in direct contributions to the candidates, with Brown having received approximately $53 million in disclosed individual contributions, compared to $16 million for Moreno. Super PACs like Fairshake are limited to making independent expenditures, such as advertising, that are not directly affiliated with or approved by the campaigns. In this case, the ads have been positive, focusing on supporting Moreno, who founded a blockchain startup.

If Brown loses, the likelihood of Republicans gaining a majority in the Senate increases, and Senator Tim Scott may become the next chairman. Scott has recently expressed support for digital assets innovation and has proposed the idea of a crypto-specific subcommittee if he assumes the chairmanship.

Fairshake has made a notable impact in the 2024 elections, having amassed a war chest of $169 million, which it has used to support candidates deemed favorable to the industry and oppose those who are not. Despite being backed by prominent figures in the crypto sector, including Coinbase and Andreessen Horowitz, the ads themselves rarely mention digital assets.

The industry's favored candidates have won in around two dozen primary elections, which could result in a greater number of pro-crypto candidates holding seats in Congress next year. Given the delicate balance of power in the Senate, every shift in the landscape has the potential to be significant.
