In a significant move, Australian law enforcement has confiscated approximately $6.4 million in cryptocurrency as part of a global operation targeting Ghost, a secure communication network allegedly designed exclusively for criminal activities. This development comes two weeks after the arrest of Jay Je Yoon Jung, a 32-year-old Sydney resident, who is believed to be the mastermind behind Ghost. Jung appeared in court to face charges, and another individual accused of distributing the app has also been apprehended. The seized cryptocurrency has been securely stored by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and will be subject to permanent forfeiture.

Notably, the operation, named Operation Kraken, has no connection to the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, as clarified by both the AFP and Kraken. The exchange expressed disappointment over the shared codename, emphasizing it has no involvement in the operation. The crackdown, which involved 700 AFP personnel, resulted in the execution of 93 search warrants, 46 arrests, intervention in 50 life-threatening situations, and the seizure of 30 illegal weapons and 200 kilograms of illicit substances.

The operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities facilitated by encrypted communication platforms.
