On Thursday, the Netherlands initiated a public consultation regarding a proposed law that would obligate cryptocurrency service providers to disclose user data to tax authorities. This move is in response to a European Union directive, known as DAC8, which necessitates the collection and reporting of user data by crypto service providers to tax authorities, facilitating the exchange of information among member states. According to Folkert Idsinga, State Secretary for Taxation and Tax Authorities, the bill's primary objective is to enhance transparency, thereby preventing tax evasion and avoidance. Idsinga stated, "The future of cooperation among EU member states will be improved through the exchange of data and crypto transactions, making them more transparent to tax authorities." The Netherlands is seeking stakeholder feedback before submitting the bill to the House of Representatives by mid-2025, with the consultation period set to conclude on November 21.
This development is part of a broader global trend, with countries such as the UK and New Zealand implementing the OECD's tax reporting framework to promote greater international transparency.
