Jimmy Patronis, Florida's chief financial officer, has proposed that the state's pension funds explore investing in cryptocurrency, citing Donald Trump's support for a US government bitcoin reserve. In a letter to the State Board of Administration's executive director, Patronis emphasized the potential benefits of diversifying the state's portfolio with bitcoin, often referred to as 'digital gold.' He suggested that the organization responsible for managing state pensions for retired public workers, including firefighters and teachers, should investigate how crypto investing could be integrated into one of its funds.
Patronis, one of three trustees overseeing the state's pension funds, requested a report to inform state lawmakers before the next session. This move would follow the lead of states like Wisconsin and Michigan, which have already made similar investments. Patronis' proposal was inspired by Trump's remarks at a prominent Bitcoin conference in Nashville, where the former president discussed the idea of a strategic crypto reserve for the US. While the future of cryptocurrency is uncertain, Patronis believes it is essential for Florida to stay ahead of the curve and consider new investment opportunities to provide the best returns for its residents.
