DUBAI - Following his release from a US prison, Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao was met with a standing ovation upon his return to the crypto scene. At the Binance Blockchain Week conference, attendees gathered to hear Zhao's first public appearance since his release last month, after serving a four-month sentence for violating the Bank Secrecy Act. The event, which took place over two days in Dubai, saw the main stage area fill up rapidly before Zhao's scheduled appearance, with no seats left available half an hour prior. Upon his introduction, the audience erupted in cheers and applause, with many attendees filming his entrance.
The session's moderator, Altcoin Daily founder Austin Arnold, began the conversation by inquiring about Zhao's prison experience. Zhao reflected on the challenges of being incarcerated, noting the limitations and restrictions that come with it, but also the opportunity for introspection. Zhao, who pleaded guilty to charges including violating the Bank Secrecy Act, expressed that he has no immediate plans to run another crypto exchange.
He also discussed the sentencing process and compared his case to that of TD Bank's recent settlement with US prosecutors. During his time in prison, Zhao noted that both former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris began discussing crypto on the campaign trail, leaving him surprised and wondering what might have been if he had waited a couple of months. Looking to the future, Zhao announced that he will be dedicating at least half of his time to an educational platform called Giggle Academy, which aims to provide digital education services to those without access to existing educational resources.
He highlighted the significant number of adults and children worldwide who lack access to education, citing 700-800 million illiterate adults and 300-500 million children who do not attend school. In addition to Giggle Academy, Zhao will be focusing on investments in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotech, and other blockchain projects.
The conference, which saw around 4,000 attendees and 1 million online streams, also featured Zhao's successor, current Binance CEO Richard Teng, who emphasized the theme of 'momentum' in the crypto industry, pointing to recent approvals of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the US as a sign of progress.
