Researchers Justin Drake and Dankrad Feist, who are affiliated with the Ethereum Foundation, have relinquished their advisory positions at EigenLayer. This move follows a controversy that arose in May when it was disclosed that they had accepted significant token payouts from the project, leading to concerns about potential conflicts of interest within the Ethereum community. EigenLayer is a notable cryptocurrency project that enables other applications to leverage Ethereum's security features. Drake and Feist, both prominent figures in the Ethereum Foundation, initially accepted advisory roles with EigenLayer in exchange for guidance and roadmap development.
However, the community reacted with concern, fearing that these payouts could influence the development trajectory of the broader Ethereum network. In response to these concerns, both researchers have now stepped down from their advisory roles.
Feist stated that although he believed his role was negotiated in good faith, he understands the perception of a conflict of interest and its impact on his role as an Ethereum researcher. Drake also apologized for the controversy, acknowledging that accepting the advisory role was a mistake. He further committed to avoiding similar situations in the future by declining all advisory roles, investments, and security council positions to maintain neutrality.
