CORRECTION (Nov. 4, 2024, 16:00 UTC): A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Fidelity Investments was involved. However, the correct company is Fidelity International.
Citigroup, a global banking giant, and Fidelity International, a leading asset manager with $862 billion in assets, have jointly developed a pioneering proof-of-concept for an on-chain money market fund. This fund incorporates a digital foreign exchange swap, enabling real-time settlement of transactions involving multiple currencies.
The primary objective is to enhance treasury management by minimizing delays and boosting liquidity. The solution is set to be showcased at the Singapore FinTech Festival 2024, as announced in a press release by the companies on Monday. By leveraging blockchain technology to tokenize money market funds, Citi and Fidelity International aim to facilitate seamless and rapid transactions. This allows investors to manage foreign exchange risks more efficiently, potentially enabling corporate treasurers to diversify their portfolios and access higher yields on US dollar-denominated money market funds while maintaining liquidity.
This collaboration is part of the Monetary Authority of Singapore's Project Guardian, an initiative exploring the potential of blockchain in financial markets. This development aligns with a broader trend in traditional finance, where major institutions like BlackRock are embracing tokenization to enhance operational efficiency, offer new investment opportunities, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
