The Ethereum blockchain, renowned for its programmability and extensive layer-2 network ecosystem, is introducing a new dimension - time. A pioneering project, Smart Transactions, launched by Vlad Zamfir, a key figure in Ethereum's proof-of-stake system, has released a platform allowing applications to execute transactions based on future events. This 'Ethereum time machine' expands the blockchain's programming capabilities, permitting smart contracts to execute transactions based on uncertain future events.

According to the STXN team, 'a user could specify that a trade be executed on a particular day and time, conditional on a set of prerequisites, which could be absolute, such as an asset's dollar value, or relative, like one asset being worth more than another.' The collaboration with Consensys, a leading Ethereum development firm, aims to complement Smart Transactions, a feature integrated into Consensys' Metamask wallets. As described by STXN co-founder Anuj Das Gupta, 'STXN acts like a time machine, guaranteeing the future for smart contracts and allowing us to overcome the limitations of what was known when they were written, thus resolving the flexibility-immutability tension in blockchains.'
