Consensys, a prominent Ethereum development firm, is set to launch its highly anticipated LINEA token, marking a significant milestone in the company's efforts to decentralize its Linea network. Founded by Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, Consensys is the driving force behind MetaMask, the most widely used Ethereum wallet. The Linea network, launched last year, aims to compete with other layer-2 networks by leveraging zero-knowledge technology to enhance Ethereum's scalability. The LINEA token will be distributed as rewards to active contributors and users of the Linea network, with the exact criteria and timeline for distribution yet to be disclosed.

The announcement comes as the U.S. regulatory landscape is expected to become more favorable for the crypto industry, with Consensys having previously operated under a cloud of uncertainty. The introduction of the LINEA token marks a major step towards decentralizing the Linea ecosystem, with the establishment of the Linea Association, a non-profit organization tasked with distributing the token and overseeing the development of the Linea protocol.

A decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) will also be formed to organize the work and distribute token grants to Linea contributors. Consensys is confident that the LINEA token will avoid the pitfalls of other layer-2 tokens, which have often been susceptible to 'sybil' attacks, by utilizing a user-attestation system designed to prevent individuals from accumulating tokens through multiple accounts.
