The UK government is set to launch a pilot program for a digital gilt instrument, similar to a government bond, utilizing distributed ledger technology, according to a statement released by the Treasury on Thursday. As part of her first Mansion House speech, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves will unveil the pilot program, dubbed the 'Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy', which includes measures to regulate Environmental, Social, and Governance ratings providers and pension mega funds. The digital gilt instrument is part of the government's efforts to demonstrate its commitment to innovation in the financial services sector.
The Treasury's announcement comes as the Labour Party, which took office in July, aims to reassure companies of its pro-innovation stance, particularly in the wake of Donald Trump's election victory. The pilot program will leverage distributed ledger technology, which underpins crypto assets and enables data to be stored and updated by each node. According to Tulip Siddiq, Economic Secretary at the Treasury, the party will soon announce its plans for the crypto sector, with speculation suggesting that the government may introduce legislation for stablecoins and staking, following in the footsteps of the previous ruling party.
