Johnny Ng: A Pioneer for Web3 in Hong Kong's Government
Following his election to the Hong Kong Legislative Council in 2022, Johnny Ng transitioned from a successful tech entrepreneur, having founded companies that specialized in biometric facial recognition technology, to a career in politics. His platform focused on creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs and fostering the growth of the tech industry in the city. As Hong Kong shifted its focus towards embracing crypto and Web3, Ng became a leading advocate for the industry within the government. He has extended invitations to major companies like Coinbase to pursue regulatory approval and has called for the introduction of crypto ETFs in Hong Kong, which were subsequently approved in April. Ng has also proposed more unconventional ideas, such as nominating Satoshi Nakamoto for the Nobel Peace Prize or the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. He emphasized the impact of Bitcoin, built on blockchain technology, in addressing inflation and providing economic solutions for underprivileged regions, as well as its role in revolutionizing global payment systems. Moving forward, Ng continues to promote Web3 businesses across Asia, not just in Hong Kong. As the head of the Subcommittee on Web3 and Virtual Asset Development, he aims to gather insights from the global Web3 industry, propose policy recommendations, and discuss the future direction of the industry in Hong Kong.
