Over the past two years, Patrick McHenry has dedicated significant effort to establishing a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency sector, despite initial setbacks. As the outgoing Republican chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, McHenry took on the challenge of promoting digital asset regulation, investing considerable political capital in the process.
His determination led to the introduction of the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21) to the House of Representatives in May 2024. The bill's passage, with 279 Republicans and 136 Democrats in support, highlighted its bipartisan backing and marked a significant milestone in the advancement of industry legislation. Although the Senate did not approve a matching measure, McHenry's party's control of the Senate raises hopes for a similar bill to pass in the upcoming session and be signed into law by President-elect Donald Trump.
McHenry's influence will be evident in any comprehensive cryptocurrency legislation that reaches Trump's desk, even if he is no longer present to see it through.
