In October 2023, Robin Linus made a significant impact on the crypto development landscape with the release of a whitepaper outlining a theoretical approach to enhancing Bitcoin's programmability. This concept, known as "BitVM," was later refined and expanded upon in August 2024 with the introduction of "BitVM2," which brought the idea closer to becoming a reality. As a core contributor to the Swiss non-profit organization ZeroSync Association, Linus's introduction of BitVM was widely regarded as a groundbreaking achievement, particularly since it did not require any modifications to Bitcoin's underlying code. The initial design of BitVM sparked a surge of interest in building projects on the Bitcoin network.
The primary objective of BitVM2 is to facilitate the creation of a rollup, essentially a secondary network built on top of Bitcoin, which can process transactions at a faster and more affordable rate without compromising the network's security. This, in turn, could enable the development of a secure bridge for transferring BTC to the rollup and back, allowing for seamless deposits and withdrawals. Linus's work is laying the foundation for some of the most notable initiatives in the Bitcoin development sector, including Rootstock's "BitVMX" project and the hybrid Bitcoin and Ethereum layer-2 BOB ("Build on Bitcoin"), which aims to establish the original blockchain network as the central hub of the DeFi universe.
