Arbitrum, the leading layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum, is strengthening its collaboration with the South Korean conglomerate Lotte Group, known for its diverse portfolio of shopping centers, media outlets, and entertainment properties. According to Offchain Labs, the developer of Arbitrum, and the Arbitrum Foundation, a non-profit organization overseeing the project's development, a significant financial agreement is being discussed to establish Arbitrum as the primary blockchain infrastructure provider for Caliverse, Lotte's metaverse gaming platform.

Although a representative from the Arbitrum Foundation initially stated that Lotte had received the largest-ever grant of $ARB tokens, this statement was later retracted, and it was clarified that no such deal has been finalized. An integration between Lotte and Arbitrum could signal a renewed interest from traditional companies in developing blockchain-based virtual worlds, a concept that had gained significant attention in the past but has since become less prominent.

Lotte first expressed interest in releasing metaverse-related products in 2022 and announced a strategic partnership with Arbitrum last year. Caliverse serves as a platform for the South Korean company to experiment with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and cryptocurrency. The app offers users a range of experiences, including virtual worlds featuring various types of media content and futuristic shopping experiences, with content from prominent brands like 7-Eleven and the Tomorrowland music festival.

Users can currently engage in activities such as shopping, attending concerts, playing games, and exploring other forms of media within the Caliverse app. The planned integration with Arbitrum would allow users to pay for these services using cryptocurrency.

Arbitrum has become a popular choice among gaming platforms, with a 72% year-over-year growth in gaming in 2024, according to Offchain Labs. The network currently hosts 119 game titles and 23 gaming-focused blockchains through its Arbitrum Orbit stack, a customizable toolkit that enables developers to create their own blockchains based on Arbitrum's technology. 'Arbitrum's blockchain is the ideal platform for Caliverse due to its industry-leading 250ms block times, which can enable seamless virtual world and gaming use cases,' said Steven Goldfeder, co-founder and CEO of Offchain Labs.

'The Arbitrum technology stack will provide Caliverse users with a seamless and consumer-friendly experience, setting a new standard for Arbitrum-based interactions in virtual worlds.'
