As his tenure comes to a close, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Rostin Behnam expressed his concerns about the lack of federal regulation in the cryptocurrency market, stressing the importance of safeguarding investors. Despite not achieving his goal of increased oversight during his time in office, Behnam believes the derivatives agency will eventually play a more significant role in regulating crypto trading. In his last public speech as chairman, delivered at the Brookings Institution, Behnam stated that cryptocurrency 'dominated every season' of his tenure and highlighted the intensifying concerns regarding customer protection, fraud, market abuse, and financial stability.
He urged innovators to prioritize investor protection, emphasizing that market regulators are essential in ensuring financial innovations are integrated into a culture of compliance and regulation that protects consumers. Behnam's approach contrasts with that of his counterpart, Gary Gensler, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who has been criticized for favoring an enforcement-driven approach to regulating crypto businesses. As both Behnam and Gensler prepare to step down, their successors have not yet been announced, except for the SEC, where former Commissioner Paul Atkins has been nominated to replace Gensler.
