Japanese electronics giant Sony has officially introduced Soneium, a general-purpose blockchain platform, marking its foray into the world of blockchain technology. This move is part of a joint project between Sony Group and Singapore-based Startale Labs, known as Sony Block Solutions Labs (SBSL).

Soneium, a layer-2 network built on Ethereum, is designed to support a wide range of applications across gaming, finance, and entertainment. Following a four-month testing period involving 14 million wallets, the platform is now live. By utilizing Optimism's OP Stack, a customizable framework that enables fast and low-cost transactions on Ethereum, Sony aims to bridge the gap between web2 and web3 audiences.

The platform prioritizes user-centric design, simplifying blockchain interactions and making web3 more accessible to everyday users. The launch of Soneium demonstrates the growing interest of traditional technology companies in blockchain technology and its potential to shape the future of media. Other notable companies, including Coinbase and Kraken, have also adopted the OP Stack to power their layer-2 blockchain networks.
