Welcome to The Protocol, CoinDesk's weekly summary of key cryptocurrency tech developments. I'm Ben Schiller, CoinDesk's Opinion and Features editor. This issue covers several significant stories, including a major acquisition in the DAO governance space and turmoil within the Ethereum Foundation.

Agora, a blockchain governance startup, is acquiring its competitor Boardroom. This strategic move aims to enhance governance within the broader Ethereum ecosystem, driven by expectations of renewed growth in decentralized governance. Agora's co-founder Yitong Zhang expressed the company's goal for 2025: making good governance the standard for all Ethereum protocols. Founded in 2022 by Zhang, Charlie Feng, and Kent Fenwick, Agora initially focused on governance tooling at Nouns DAO.

It provides user-friendly, open-source governance tools for DAOs like Uniswap and Optimism. Boardroom, which took a more horizontal approach to blockchain governance, will see its employees offered roles at Agora, with its founder Kevin Nielsen remaining as an advisor. The acquisition amount was not disclosed, but Agora plans to keep both platforms running and integrate the tools based on user feedback. Additionally, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined plans for a major restructuring of the Ethereum Foundation to streamline decision-making and address inefficiencies.

This move has sparked criticism, with some arguing it undermines Ethereum's decentralization ethos. The foundation has faced pressure to define a clearer vision for Ethereum's future. In other news, the developers of USDh, a stablecoin built on Bitcoin's layer 2 Stacks, have secured $3 million in liquidity through a deal with DeFi protocol Hermetica and Bitcoin lending protocol Zest.

This collaboration aims to offer yield on USDh through lending against sBTC, with projections of an annual percentage yield as high as 50%. Furthermore, World Mobile has announced a $25 million grant program for Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) projects, focusing on decentralized communications, on-chain governance, and the tokenization of real-world assets.
