In a shocking turn of events, David Balland, a key figure behind the cryptocurrency wallet developer Ledger, was rescued in a police operation after being taken hostage in a ransom attack in France. This dramatic rescue brings an end to days of speculation surrounding the incident. According to Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau, Balland and his wife were abducted from their home in central France and held at two different locations, as reported by Reuters.
The kidnappers contacted another Ledger co-founder, demanding a ransom payment in cryptocurrencies. An operation by French elite forces, GIGN, resulted in Balland's rescue on Wednesday, while his wife was found the following day, the prosecutor revealed. Balland received hospital treatment for an injury to one of his hands, which was mutilated, though Beccuau did not disclose further details, as per Reuters.
Local newspaper Le Parisien reported that the attackers severed Balland's finger and sent it to associates in an attempt to extort a ransom. Pascal Gauthier, Chairman and CEO of Ledger, expressed relief that David and his wife are now safe. Earlier in the week, rumors circulated on social media that one of Ledger's co-founders had been kidnapped, with some reports falsely alleging that Eric Larchevêque was the victim. At the time, CoinDesk reached out to Ledger for confirmation but received no comment.
CEO Gauthier stated, 'Our primary concern was to allow law enforcement to do their job and protect the investigation's integrity.' The incident highlights a disturbing trend of robberies and crimes targeting crypto traders and industry figures as the crypto market continues to grow, creating wealth for investors. For instance, Dean Skurka, the CEO of WonderFi, a publicly listed crypto holding company, was kidnapped for ransom in Toronto last year.
ZachXBT, a popular blockchain sleuth, noted on Telegram, 'There has been an increase in real-life robberies targeting crypto traders in Western Europe over the past few months, with the cases involving known figures in the crypto community being held at gunpoint.'
