Hyperliquid Revolutionizes DeFi with Shared Liquidity and Composability

The concept that liquidity breeds liquidity is particularly relevant for Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange that has quickly become the go-to platform for traders seeking to trade perpetual futures, also known as perps or blockchain-based derivatives contracts. Founded by Harvard alumni Jeff Yan and iliensinc, a pseudonymous developer, Hyperliquid launched in 2023 and has since capitalized on the depth and volume of its order book by introducing a novel concept: composability. This DeFi concept allows permissionless smart contracts to interlock seamlessly, much like LEGO blocks, to form the foundation of new tokenized financial products. Hyperliquid's Ethereum-compatible HyperEVM is directly connected to its high-performance HyperCore blockchain, enabling other applications to tap into the platform's shared liquidity rather than fragmenting it. As a result, applications such as wallets or even other exchanges can leverage Hyperliquid as a backend to offer perps trading and other services, effectively creating a network effect where increased adoption leads to deeper liquidity, a broader range of assets, and enhanced overall trading experience. With hundreds of developers, including prominent names like MetaMask, Phantom wallet, and VALR, utilizing Hyperliquid's 'builder codes,' the platform has generated approximately $90 million in revenue, according to Flowscan. The growing popularity of Hyperliquid has drawn praise from its users, with Hyunsu Jung, CEO of Hyperion DeFi, describing it as 'the AWS for finance.' Jung emphasizes that Hyperliquid is more than just a perpetuals exchange; it provides a layer-one blockchain infrastructure that offers liquidity and facilitates the smooth operation of various markets, allowing builders to focus on creating user-friendly interfaces while Hyperliquid handles the underlying liquidity and execution. This approach enables integrators to charge fees based on the notional size of their users' trades without having to develop and maintain their own backend infrastructure. The integration of Hyperliquid with popular wallets like MetaMask has been particularly successful, with MetaMask reporting over 100 million users worldwide. By combining forces with Hyperliquid's EVM module, MetaMask has been able to provide its users with self-custodial access to perps directly from the wallet, streamlining fund transfers and allowing users to trade using the tokens they already hold. MetaMask's Staff Product Manager, Matthieu Saint Olive, highlights the benefits of this partnership, noting that Hyperliquid excels at matching orders, a challenging task that MetaMask does not attempt to replicate. Instead, MetaMask focuses on delivering a seamless user experience while Hyperliquid handles the underlying complexity. The collaboration has yielded impressive results, with MetaMask seeing growth beyond crypto into areas like commodities and equities. According to Saint Olive, real-world-asset markets have expanded from a small fraction of perp volume at the start of 2026 to approximately a quarter of it today. In terms of fees, MetaMask charges a flat 0.1% builder fee, with no hidden spread or execution costs, ensuring transparency and fairness for traders. The partnership between Hyperliquid and centralized exchanges like VALR has also proven beneficial, with VALR handing over its liquidity requirements to Hyperliquid's perps order book. Despite initially building its own infrastructure for perpetual futures, VALR's CEO and co-founder, Farzam Ehsani, acknowledges that it was challenging to achieve sufficient volume and liquidity. By partnering with Hyperliquid, VALR has been able to tap into a vast pool of global market participants, significantly enhancing its trading experience. Looking ahead, the potential for cross-venue arbitrage opportunities is vast, particularly when major players like Robinhood, Coinbase, and Intercontinental Exchange enter the perps market. According to Jung, this will create opportunities for traders to maintain positions on multiple platforms, leveraging non-toxic flow to generate organic funding rates.
