The T3 Financial Crime Unit, a collaborative initiative between Tron, Tether, and TRM Labs, has played a crucial role in assisting Spanish authorities in dismantling a large-scale, multinational financial crime syndicate operating across various European jurisdictions. The syndicate allegedly provided money laundering services to criminal organizations, facilitating the conversion of cash into cryptocurrency. The T3 Financial Crime Unit has reported the seizure of $26.4 million in assets, marking the largest coordinated freeze since its inception. To date, the unit has successfully frozen over $126 million in assets.

According to Chris Janczewski, head of investigations at TRM Labs, the success of this operation can be attributed to the effective collaboration between public and private sector entities, which leverages their respective strengths to combat cryptocurrency-related crimes. Janczewski emphasized that law enforcement agencies bring traditional expertise to investigations, while private sector partners contribute technical capabilities essential for crypto investigations. The Spanish authorities, with the assistance of the T3 Financial Crime Unit, identified the organization through a combination of police surveillance, investigative measures, and Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) Know Your Customer (KYC) records. The unit's ability to bridge the gap between cryptocurrency and law enforcement has been instrumental in connecting on-chain activity with real-world actions.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino noted that Tether has collaborated with over 220 law enforcement agencies across 51 jurisdictions, resulting in the freezing of more than 2,400 addresses and nearly 2.2 billion USDT. Europol reported that the organized crime syndicate was primarily composed of Ukrainian nationals, with additional members from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.
