The possibility of Bitcoin being added to the balance sheet of a European central bank has taken a step forward after the Czech National Bank's board approved a proposal to investigate investing its reserves in alternative assets. The central bank's Governor, Aleš Michl, has expressed interest in diversifying the bank's portfolio, with bitcoin being a potential addition. 'My objective is to diversify our portfolio, and if bitcoin proves to be a viable option, we will consider it,' Michl stated. The bank will conduct an analysis and decide on the next steps based on the results.
However, not everyone is in favor of exploring bitcoin as a reserve option, with the Czech Republic's Finance Minister, Zbynek Stanjura, expressing concerns about the asset's stability. Meanwhile, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has stated that she is confident bitcoin will not be included in the reserve assets of any EU central banks.
The Czech National Bank has not commented on the specific assets being considered.
