UBS, a leading Swiss bank, has successfully completed a proof-of-concept for its Key4 Gold offering on the Ethereum-based layer-2 network ZKSync. This trial, conducted on a test network, highlights the bank's ongoing exploration of blockchain technology. UBS has previously experimented with blockchain, including the launch of a tokenized money market investment fund, uMint, built on Ethereum.
The Key4 Gold program allows Swiss clients to purchase a direct claim to physical gold, featuring fractional investments, real-time pricing, deep liquidity, secure storage, and optional physical delivery. The project is currently hosted on the bank's private blockchain, the UBS Gold Network, but the team sought to scale the project while maintaining its privacy. ZKSync, a zero-knowledge rollup, aims to increase transaction speed and reduce fees using zero-knowledge cryptography.
The test transaction may indicate UBS's interest in utilizing layer-2 technologies for its activities. However, the bank has not disclosed plans to develop its own layer-2 technology. This collaboration is not an isolated incident, as Deutsche Bank has also announced plans to build a layer-2 using ZKSync's technology, demonstrating the potential for blockchain to enhance traditional financial products.
