Following his conviction for money laundering in 2024, Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev has been released from prison to begin preparing his appeal, as announced in a recent post. The 31-year-old Russian national received a 64-month prison sentence in a Dutch court last May, with the indictment stating that Pertsev had a history of money laundering and should have been aware of suspicious transactions on the platform.
Tornado Cash operates as a coin-mixing protocol, enabling users to send tokens privately by pooling and shuffling funds to conceal their origin. The U.S. government has imposed sanctions on the protocol, citing its alleged use by North Korean hacking group Lazarus.
An update to this story reflects Pertsev's release, as reported on February 7.
