The concept of perpetual futures has become a cornerstone of the crypto industry, but according to DRW CEO Don Wilson, many misconceptions surround this financial product. In a series of posts, Wilson clarified that perpetual futures, or 'perps,' are essentially futures contracts without an expiration date. The high leverage, auto-deleveraging, and continuous trading often associated with crypto perpetuals are characteristics of how some exchanges have chosen to implement these products, rather than inherent features of the contracts themselves.
Wilson's comments come at a time when interest in introducing perpetual futures to regulated US markets is growing, with several exchanges exploring the launch of these products beyond the crypto space. Unlike traditional futures markets, crypto exchanges operate continuously, utilizing digital collateral and real-time margin calculations, which has enabled them to offer products with higher leverage and alternative liquidation mechanisms. However, Wilson emphasizes that these design choices should not be conflated with perpetual futures themselves.
Instead, he argues that digital payment systems create opportunities for improved risk management, allowing for real-time settlement and reduced margin requirements. The true innovation of perpetual futures, according to Wilson, lies in their ability to eliminate the need for repeated contract rollovers, thereby reducing transaction costs and allowing positions to more closely track the futures curve.
Wilson urges regulators to focus on the economic substance of perpetual futures, rather than their legal classification, and to recognize them as a valuable tool for price discovery and risk management across various markets, including commodities, securities, and crypto.
