Hyperliquid Revolutionizes DeFi with Shared Liquidity and Composability
The concept of liquidity begetting liquidity is a fundamental principle in the world of finance. Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange, has become the go-to platform for traders seeking to engage with perpetual futures, also known as 'perps.' These blockchain-based derivatives contracts allow users to speculate on asset prices with leverage and no expiration date. Founded by Harvard classmates Jeff Yan and iliensinc, Hyperliquid has been live since the start of 2023 and is now capitalizing on its order book volume and depth by offering a unique concept: composability. This DeFi concept enables permissionless smart contracts to interlock like LEGO blocks, forming the foundation of new tokenized financial products. Hyperliquid's Ethereum-compatible HyperEVM connects directly to its high-speed HyperCore blockchain, allowing other applications to build upon the platform's shared liquidity without fragmenting it. As a result, applications like wallets and exchanges can utilize Hyperliquid as a backend to offer perps trading and other services, thereby deepening liquidity, expanding asset variety, and amplifying network effects. The platform has attracted hundreds of developers, including prominent names like MetaMask, Phantom wallet, and VALR, who have generated approximately $90 million in revenue. Hyunsu Jung, CEO of Hyperion DeFi, praises Hyperliquid, stating that it is 'not just a perpetuals exchange, but more like the AWS for finance.' Jung highlights the platform's layer-one blockchain infrastructure, which provides liquidity and execution, allowing builders to focus on delivering exceptional user experiences. The 'builder codes' offered by Hyperliquid enable integrators to charge fees on the notional size of their users' trades without developing the backend or maintaining liquidity. This approach has drawn the attention of major players like MetaMask, which has integrated Hyperliquid's EVM module to provide its users with self-custodial access to perps. The partnership has streamlined fund transfers, allowing users to trade directly with the tokens they already hold. MetaMask's Staff Product Manager, Matthieu Saint Olive, notes that Hyperliquid excels at matching orders, which is a challenging task. By routing orders directly to the Hyperliquid order book, MetaMask Perps offers exceptional liquidity and execution quality. The company is witnessing growth beyond crypto, with real-world-asset markets accounting for a significant portion of perp volume. In terms of fees, MetaMask charges a flat 0.1% builder fee, ensuring transparency and fairness. The exchange's approach to fees is designed to be a competitive advantage, rather than a source of friction. Another notable example is VALR, a large centralized exchange that has opted to utilize Hyperliquid's perps order book for its liquidity requirements. Despite initially building its infrastructure in-house, VALR struggled to achieve sufficient volume and liquidity for its perpetual futures. However, by integrating with Hyperliquid, the exchange has been able to tap into the platform's vast volume and market participants. Looking ahead, the DeFi landscape is poised for significant growth, with opportunities for cross-venue arbitrage emerging as major players like Robinhood and Coinbase expand their offerings. As the market continues to evolve, Hyperliquid is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of DeFi.
