How Perpetual Futures Dominate Bitcoin and Ether Markets
The process of setting crypto prices is often misunderstood, with many believing it's driven by spot trading. However, perpetual futures, or 'perps,' have become the primary driver of price discovery for bitcoin, ether, and other cryptocurrencies. These leverage-friendly contracts never expire and account for roughly 93% of all crypto futures volume. A study in the Journal of Financial Markets found that perpetual swaps on unregulated venues were the strongest instruments for bitcoin price discovery. Other research has identified Binance's perpetual market as the primary source of price formation across the fragmented crypto landscape. Historically, perps have led price rallies, particularly during bear markets. The funding rate, which is the cost of holding a perpetual contract, is a key factor in price discovery and is closely watched by traders. The recent SpaceX IPO provides a unique example of how perpetual futures can accurately predict prices, with pre-IPO perpetual futures contracts pricing the company's valuation more accurately than traditional Wall Street methods. However, the derivatives market is not without its limitations, as it can be blind to supply-side factors, such as the release of locked-up insider shares. Overall, the evidence suggests that perpetual futures are increasingly driving price discovery in cryptocurrency markets, with spot markets following suit.
