Ethereum's co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, has put forth a radical proposal to revamp the framework underlying the network's smart contracts. Buterin's idea, shared on the primary developer forum, involves substituting the Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V, a popular open-source framework known for its built-in encryption and other advantages. The EVM is a crucial component of Ethereum's design, enabling seamless interactions between Ethereum and other EVM-based networks, including layer-2 networks like Coinbase's Base chain.

Buterin believes transitioning to RISC-V will greatly enhance the efficiency and simplicity of Ethereum's execution layer, addressing a significant scaling bottleneck. RISC-V, which has seen limited adoption in other blockchain ecosystems, could offer efficiency gains of over 100 times for certain applications, reducing the network's costs and simplifying the implementation of certain encryption methods.

This proposal is a long-term project, comparable to other initiatives like the Beam Chain, which aims to revamp Ethereum's consensus layer. The RISC-V proposal comes at a time when the Ethereum community is reassessing its direction, following declining transaction volumes and a lagging token performance. The Ethereum Foundation's recent leadership transition also reflects the community's efforts to regain its lead and provide a clearer roadmap for the ecosystem's development.
