The Double-Edged Sword of Perpetual Futures in Crypto Trading
When discussing crypto trading with experienced traders, perpetual futures, or 'perps', are often the first topic that comes up. These derivatives contracts allow traders to control large positions with minimal capital, but they also come with unique challenges. To understand what makes perps different from other derivatives and how they cater to the needs of both institutional and retail traders, we spoke with seasoned traders who have thrived in the perps market. They highlighted the deep liquidity, low trading fees, and efficient margin usage as key benefits, but also expressed concerns over funding rates, which can add up over time. So, why do traders prefer perps? According to Lucas Krenn, a derivatives trader at STS Digital, perps are the primary tool for crypto-native firms, offering better liquidity and lower costs compared to dated futures. Kenneth Ong, an independent trader, echoed this sentiment, citing the advantages of perps for retail traders, including better fills, lower fees, and the ability to run both long and short positions simultaneously. However, both traders also warned about the risks associated with perps, particularly the funding rate, which can be a significant burden for traders who hold positions for extended periods. As Krenn noted, the funding rate is 'unquantifiable at the point of trade and unhedgeable afterwards', making it a major concern for traders. Despite these challenges, perps have become a crucial part of the crypto trading landscape, offering a unique combination of liquidity, leverage, and flexibility. As the market continues to evolve, it's likely that perps will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of crypto trading.
