In a Manhattan court, Avraham "Avi" Eisenberg, the individual responsible for exploiting Mango Markets and stealing $110 million in 2022, was sentenced to 52 months in prison on Thursday. This sentence was handed down due to his guilty plea for possessing child sexual exploitation material, rather than his conviction for the cryptocurrency theft. Eisenberg had previously been found guilty by a New York jury of wire fraud, commodities fraud, and commodities manipulation related to the Mango Markets incident. He had also pleaded guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material, which was discovered on his devices following his arrest.
The defense team has requested either a new trial or an acquittal on the Mango Markets-related charges, citing issues with the case's venue and the government's proof of the MNGO Perpetual being a "swap." Judge Arun Subramanian stated that he would consider the motion, but emphasized that the primary focus of the sentence was on the child sexual exploitation material charge. The judge acknowledged Eisenberg's efforts to understand the impact of his crimes but deemed a prison sentence necessary.
Eisenberg will serve five years of probation with strict rules after his release, including the installation of monitoring software on his electronic devices and participation in a drug outpatient program. Prosecutors had requested a sentence of 6.5 to 8 years in prison, highlighting the severity of Eisenberg's offenses. Eisenberg's lawyers argued that his strict religious upbringing and struggles to conform to social norms contributed to his crimes, describing him as a "fundamentally decent person" who has faced challenges adapting to life in jail.
