The government of Gibraltar has announced plans to establish a pioneering set of rules for the clearing and settlement of cryptocurrency derivatives, thereby creating a robust regulatory framework aimed at enhancing market integrity and mitigating key risks. Over the past six months, the government has worked closely with the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission and Bullish to develop a framework that adapts traditional financial clearing regulations to the virtual asset market. This framework will facilitate the clearing and settlement of virtual asset derivative contracts through a recognized clearing house, according to Bullish. Clearing houses play a crucial role in ensuring that trades are successfully finalized, with buyers and sellers fulfilling their obligations.
In the absence of regulatory oversight, many virtual asset exchanges have been performing this function, which can lead to process failures, as noted by Bullish. The proposed regulatory regime will enable the establishment of separate clearing houses characterized by enhanced transparency and capitalization.
