CoW Swap, a decentralized exchange aggregator, is introducing a novel feature called Combinatorial Auctions, designed to increase its transaction handling capacity and offer greater rewards to trade facilitators. This innovation allows solvers, who route trades for the aggregator, to collaborate for the first time to provide traders with the best possible swaps.
Aggregators act as one-stop shops, scouring multiple DEXs to identify the most cost-efficient trades. The existing system is limited, as only one solver can win each auction, forcing other orders to wait for the next auction. In contrast, the new system, which has passed a DAO vote, enables multiple solvers to propose more efficient solutions to pending orders, if available. According to Andrea Canidio, a senior research economist at CoW DAO, 'if a combined solution creates shared value for all parties, it wins; otherwise, different solvers can fulfill different orders independently.' CoW DAO estimates that this move could increase order throughput by approximately 33%, a significant development as competition among DEX aggregators intensifies.
Over the past week, CoW Swap and its rival aggregator, 1inch, have been neck-and-neck, each processing around $2 billion in trading volume on Ethereum, according to DefiLlama data. If CoW Swap's new feature performs as predicted and increases trading throughput, it could help the platform gain a competitive edge. Unlike most decentralized exchanges and aggregators, CoW Swap operates differently, utilizing a peer-to-peer system instead of liquidity pools to facilitate trades. This approach prevents traders from falling victim to negative forms of maximal extractable value (MEV).
The introduction of Combinatorial Auctions is expected to increase the average rewards earned by solvers by around 25%, according to CoW DAO. However, this development may not be entirely beneficial for the protocol, as increased rewards could potentially hurt the protocol's efficiency if not accompanied by a commensurate increase in trading activity.
Canidio expects CoW Swap to benefit from higher transaction throughput with a less-than-proportional rise in solver rewards, making the platform more efficient. CoW Swap anticipates testing of the new system to commence around May 20, with a full launch on all chains scheduled for around June 3.
