Commissioner Christy Goldsmith Romero of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has announced her decision to leave the agency by the end of the month. This move follows the earlier announcement by fellow Commissioner Summer Mersinger, who will be departing on May 30 to take on the role of CEO at the Blockchain Association, a lobbying group focused on the crypto industry. In her statement, Goldsmith Romero reflected on the growth and resilience of derivatives markets during her tenure, highlighting their ability to withstand market stress and volatility. She also expressed appreciation for the work of the CFTC Technology Advisory Committee, which she sponsored, citing their notable reports and public forums on the future of finance, including discussions on responsible AI, decentralized finance, and digital assets.
The upcoming departure of Acting Chairman Caroline Pham has also been reported, with her exit expected to occur after the confirmation of former Commissioner Brian Quintenz as the new agency leader. Goldsmith Romero's departure, initially announced as contingent upon Quintenz's confirmation, will now take place on May 31, reducing the number of CFTC commissioners to two.
This number is likely to remain unchanged until the nomination and confirmation of additional commissioners to fill the vacant seats.
