Hyperliquid Revolutionizes DeFi with Composable Perpetual Futures

The concept that liquidity breeds liquidity is being exemplified by Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange that has become the go-to platform for traders seeking to engage with perpetual futures, also known as 'perps'. Founded by Harvard alumni Jeff Yan and a developer known as iliensinc, Hyperliquid launched in 2023, offering a unique value proposition: the ability for firms to compose with its shared liquidity, rather than fragmenting it. This concept, known as composibility, is reminiscent of money LEGOs, where permissionless smart contracts can be combined to create new, tokenized financial products. Hyperliquid's Ethereum-compatible HyperEVM is directly connected to its high-performance HyperCore blockchain, allowing other applications to tap into the platform's shared liquidity. This enables wallets, exchanges, and other applications to leverage Hyperliquid's backend, offering perps trading and other services without having to develop their own infrastructure. As more developers integrate with Hyperliquid, the platform's liquidity deepens, the variety of assets expands, and network effects intensify. With hundreds of developers, including prominent names like MetaMask and VALR, utilizing Hyperliquid's 'builder codes', the platform has generated over $90 million in revenue. The platform's users and partners alike praise its innovative approach. 'Hyperliquid is not just a perpetuals exchange; it's more like the AWS for finance,' said Hyunsu Jung, CEO of Hyperion DeFi. 'The perps part is great, but this is really a layer-one blockchain infrastructure, providing liquidity and allowing anyone to build on top of it.' Similar to AWS, builders using Hyperliquid's platform own their users and control the user interface, while Hyperliquid provides the underlying liquidity and execution. This enables integrators to focus on delivering a great user experience, while Hyperliquid handles the backend. For instance, MetaMask, a leading Ethereum-based wallet with over 100 million users worldwide, has integrated Hyperliquid's EVM module, providing users with self-custodial access to perps directly from the wallet. This integration enables streamlined fund transfers, allowing users to trade directly with the tokens they already hold. According to Matthieu Saint Olive, Staff Product Manager at MetaMask, 'Matching orders is genuinely hard, and Hyperliquid is excellent at it, so we don't try to rebuild it.' By routing orders directly to Hyperliquid's order book, MetaMask Perps offers some of the best liquidity and execution quality available. Looking ahead, as more prominent exchanges and financial institutions enter the perps market, opportunities for cross-venue arbitrage will emerge, according to Jung. 'Say you have a position on Robinhood and the other side of the position on Hyperliquid,' he said. 'With a lot of non-toxic flow, you'll be able to see more organic mechanisms for funding rates.'
