The FIFA Blockchain, an Avalanche L1, is a customizable blockchain that leverages Avalanche's technology. This announcement follows Avalanche's recent major upgrade, Avalanche9000, designed to attract new developers and encourage the creation of customized L1s. FIFA's foray into blockchain and crypto began in 2022 with the release of an NFT collection on the Algorand blockchain before the Qatar World Cup.
The organization hinted at this shift in April, indicating a move to an EVM-compatible blockchain while pursuing Web3 initiatives. Although the NFT trend has diminished after the crypto winter, FIFA's continued focus on blockchain suggests that the technology's use case remains relevant, with large enterprises still interested in the industry. According to John Nahas, chief business officer at Ava Labs, 'Avalanche is designed for enterprises and organizations seeking custom, high-performance blockchain solutions.' FIFA's decision to launch its L1 on Avalanche demonstrates the technology's capability to support global-scale applications with speed, flexibility, and security. Currently, FIFA's plans for its new blockchain are limited to its World Cup NFT collection and digital collectibles marketplace, with no further releases announced.
