The tale of the first real-world purchase with bitcoin has been etched into the internet's memory, with the Bitcoin Pizza Purchase now valued at over $1 billion. However, few know that Hanyecz spent nearly 10 times more bitcoin after this historic purchase, possibly as a form of penance for his significant contributions to Bitcoin's early technical development.
As a pioneer, Hanyecz created the first MacOS client for Bitcoin Core, enabling MacOS devices to run the software, and discovered that he could mine bitcoin with his computer's graphics card, propelling bitcoin mining forward. His invention earned him a virtual drop-in from Satoshi Nakamoto himself and may have inspired his famous Pizza Day purchase. In a 2019 interview, Hanyecz revealed that he stopped advertising GPU mining after Satoshi expressed concerns that it could limit the incentive for new users. Perhaps this conversation spurred Hanyecz to spend nearly 100,000 BTC in the year that followed, including the 10,000 BTC used to buy two large Papa John's pizzas.
While it's impossible to verify how he spent the remaining bitcoin, Hanyecz's wallet balance history shows that he received and spent 81,432 BTC from April to November 2010, worth over $8.6 billion today. Despite the staggering value of his spent bitcoin, Hanyecz views the original purchase as a victory, having transmuted his electricity and computing power into a cheap dinner. For him, the transaction was a win, and he had no idea that bitcoin would command the price it does today.
