Hyperliquid Revolutionizes DeFi with Crypto Perps and Interoperable Liquidity
The concept of liquidity begetting liquidity is a fundamental principle in the world of finance. Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange, has become a go-to platform for traders seeking to engage with perpetual futures, also known as 'perps.' These blockchain-based derivatives contracts allow users to speculate on asset prices with leverage and no expiration date. Founded by Harvard classmates Jeff Yan and iliensinc, Hyperliquid has capitalized on its robust order book by offering firms a unique opportunity to compose with its shared liquidity, rather than fragmenting it. This approach, inspired by decentralized finance (DeFi), enables permissionless smart contracts to interlock like building blocks, giving rise to innovative tokenized financial products. Hyperliquid's Ethereum-compatible HyperEVM is directly connected to its high-performance HyperCore blockchain, allowing other applications to tap into the platform's shared liquidity. This integration enables wallets and exchanges to piggyback on Hyperliquid, utilizing it as a backend to offer perps trading and other services. As more developers deploy on and integrate Hyperliquid, the platform's liquidity deepens, and the variety of assets expands, creating a snowball effect. Hundreds of developers, including prominent names like MetaMask, Phantom wallet, and VALR, have already leveraged Hyperliquid's 'builder codes,' generating approximately $90 million in revenue. The platform has garnered significant praise from its growing user base. Hyunsu Jung, CEO of Hyperion DeFi, describes Hyperliquid as 'the AWS for finance,' highlighting its role as a layer-one blockchain infrastructure that provides liquidity and execution. Similar to AWS, builders on Hyperliquid own their users and control the user interface, while the platform handles the underlying liquidity and execution. The use of builder codes allows integrators to focus on delivering a seamless user experience, while Hyperliquid manages the backend. For instance, MetaMask, a popular Ethereum-based wallet, has integrated Hyperliquid's EVM module, enabling users to access perps directly from the wallet. This partnership has streamlined fund transfers, allowing users to trade with the tokens they already hold. According to Matthieu Saint Olive, Staff Product Manager at MetaMask, the integration has been successful, with the wallet seeing growth beyond crypto into areas like commodities and equities. When it comes to fees, MetaMask charges a transparent 0.1% builder fee, with no hidden spread or execution costs. The exchange's CEO, Farzam Ehsani, has also opted to utilize Hyperliquid's perps order book, citing the difficulty of achieving sufficient volume and liquidity on their own platform. Looking ahead, the emergence of cross-venue arbitrage opportunities is expected to create new possibilities for traders. As the likes of Robinhood, Coinbase, and Intercontinental Exchange expand their perps offerings, Hyperliquid is poised to play a significant role in the evolving landscape of decentralized finance.
