The Mayor of Panama City, Mayer Mizrachi, has been exploring the possibility of integrating bitcoin payments into the city's services, including transit fees for the Panama Canal. This idea was discussed at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, where Mizrachi mentioned the potential benefits of setting up a bitcoin reserve and offering incentives for bitcoin payments, such as expedited processing. Previously, under Mizrachi's leadership, Panama City passed legislation allowing residents to pay taxes, parking fines, and other fees using bitcoin, ether, and certain stablecoins, drawing inspiration from El Salvador's decision to adopt bitcoin as legal tender.
