I recently received a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from Coinbase, warning me that my account had been compromised. This is a common scam tactic, and I immediately recognized the red flags.
The caller, who introduced himself as Riccardo, claimed to be from Coinbase's Actions and Protections Department and stated that my account information had been breached. However, there were several inconsistencies in his story that raised my suspicions.
Firstly, Coinbase never contacts customers via phone to inform them of a breach; instead, they use email. Additionally, the caller's claim that they would freeze my account for 24 hours and that a supervisor would follow up with me seemed dubious. After the call, I received a suspicious email with the subject line 'your case is under review,' which Gmail flagged as spam. The email's sender address was not affiliated with Coinbase, and the domain was recently created, indicating a potential scam.
I called the number back a few days later, but no one answered, suggesting that the scammer had moved on. This experience serves as a reminder to be vigilant when receiving unsolicited calls or emails, especially those claiming to be from financial institutions or cryptocurrency exchanges.
It's essential to verify the authenticity of such communications and never share personal or sensitive information with unknown individuals.
