French law enforcement has brought charges against 25 individuals, six of whom are minors, in connection with a string of crypto-related kidnappings in Paris. According to the public prosecutor's office, the majority of the suspects are linked to the recent failed kidnapping attempt of the family of Pierre Noizat, CEO of crypto exchange Paymium, as reported by Le Monde. The investigation, which began on May 13, focuses on the attempted abduction of Noizat's daughter and grandson.
Additionally, the probe examined other unsuccessful kidnapping attempts, including an earlier attempt on Noizat's family and a thwarted abduction near Nantes. These arrests follow a series of high-profile crypto kidnappings that have plagued France this year, including the kidnapping of a French crypto millionaire's father in May and the abduction of Ledger co-founder David Ballard and his wife earlier in the year. In response to these incidents, France's Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, convened a meeting with crypto stakeholders in May to discuss security measures.
The suspects in the May 13 case range in age from 16 to 23, with six being minors, and were primarily born in France, although three hail from Senegal, Angola, and Russia. Lawyer Ambroise Vienet-Legué, representing an 18-year-old suspect in the Nantes case, noted that the suspects are often young individuals lured by financial gain and caught up in situations beyond their control. A source familiar with the investigation revealed that the suspects are believed to be locally hired and paid by a Southeast Asian criminal operation to carry out the kidnappings for as little as $10,000.
Eighteen suspects are currently in pre-trial detention, three have requested a deferred hearing, and four are under judicial supervision. While France has been at the epicenter of crypto kidnappings, similar crimes are increasing globally, including several recent cases in the United States.
