Botanix Labs has recently partnered with several major players in the crypto industry to operate nodes on its Bitcoin layer-2 network. Among the 16 new node operators are Galaxy, a digital asset financial services firm founded by Mike Novogratz, and Fireblocks, a specialist in crypto custody. These operators are expected to go live once the Botanix mainnet is launched later this quarter. By creating a federation of diverse entities running nodes, Botanix Labs aims to establish its network as decentralized from the outset.

The company plans to transition to a dynamic federation that can support hundreds of nodes, with the ultimate goal of allowing anyone worldwide to operate their own Botanix node. Other participants in the federation include Alchemy, a blockchain developer, Antpool, a bitcoin mining pool, and UTXO Management, a hedge fund manager. The testnet, known as Aragog, has introduced several tools that will form the foundation of Botanix's decentralized finance (DeFi) offerings, including a BTC-backed stablecoin called Palladium, a decentralized exchange named Bitzy, and a lending and borrowing market called Spindle.

The Spiderchain protocol, developed by Botanix, is designed to be compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), potentially making any smart contract or DeFi application on Ethereum compatible with the Bitcoin-based Botanix network. As the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, Bitcoin is being explored as a potential settlement layer for DeFi activities on other blockchain networks.

With its market cap consistently accounting for over 60% of the entire crypto market, developers see an opportunity to harness the significant reserves held in Bitcoin to finance applications on networks like Ethereum, Solana, or Cardano, which are more technically suited to DeFi. This trend has been described as 'infrastructure evolution' rather than 'narrative dilution,' highlighting the potential for Bitcoin DeFi to become a growing sector.
