Tigran Gambaryan, a former US federal agent who led Binance's financial crime compliance efforts, has announced his departure from the company following a four-year tenure marked by significant challenges. Gambaryan joined Binance in 2021, a time when the crypto exchange was under increasing scrutiny for its compliance with anti-money laundering regulations. Under his leadership, the company built a 100-person global investigations unit comprising former prosecutors and federal agents.
However, his time at Binance took a dramatic turn in 2024 when he was detained by Nigerian authorities for eight months on allegations related to the exchange's operations. Following his release on humanitarian grounds, Gambaryan was ultimately cleared of charges. In a departure statement, Gambaryan expressed his desire to continue bridging the gap between enforcement, technology, and compliance, citing the need for experienced operators who can facilitate communication between these fields.
