In a significant move, Ukrainian lawmakers have initiated the process of creating a cryptocurrency reserve. A group of eight parliament members from the Verkhovna Rada submitted a bill on Tuesday, proposing that the National Bank of Ukraine be authorized to incorporate virtual assets into its gold and foreign exchange reserves.
The bill is sponsored by Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the first deputy chairman of the Committee on Finance, Tax, and Customs Policy, who views this legislation as a crucial step towards integrating Ukraine into the global financial innovation landscape. Zheleznyak emphasized that effective management of cryptocurrency reserves would enhance macroeconomic stability and create new opportunities for the growth of the digital economy. However, he clarified that the proposed policy would not obligate the central bank to create a cryptocurrency reserve but rather provide it with the option to do so. Notably, Ukraine already possesses a substantial amount of bitcoin, with 46,351 BTC valued at over $5 billion, surpassing many countries except the U.S., China, and the U.K.
Although these holdings are currently managed by civil servants and officials, the proposed legislation could potentially lead to a more formalized approach to cryptocurrency reserves, a trend that is gaining momentum globally, with countries like the U.S. and Pakistan exploring similar initiatives.
