The Need for a Standardized Framework to Evaluate Centralized Exchanges
The absence of a uniform evaluation method for centralized exchanges has led to a reliance on surface-level metrics and inconsistent transparency. To bridge this gap, CoinDesk's Exchange Benchmark report offers a structured and independently verified framework for assessing counterparty risk. The April 2025 edition is the most comprehensive to date, covering 89 exchanges across spot and derivatives markets, with refined scoring across eight categories and a more robust regulatory methodology. This report enables a clearer distinction between exchanges that meet institutional standards and those that do not. As the industry continues to grow and face increased regulatory scrutiny, the need for meaningful due diligence remains a challenge due to self-reported figures, fragmented disclosures, and varying licensing regimes. The Exchange Benchmark report evaluates each exchange based on over 100 metrics, assigning a grade from AA to F, with grades BB and above considered top-tier. Key findings include six spot exchanges earning an AA rating and 19 exchanges classified as top-tier overall, with continued strengthening at the top end of the market. The report highlights the correlation between DDQ engagement and higher scores, as well as the expansion of support for off-exchange settlement. Top-tier exchanges accounted for over 60 percent of Q1 spot volume, despite making up less than 20 percent of ranked venues, demonstrating the ongoing correlation between operational quality and volume concentration.
