For years, Ethereum has been at the forefront of decentralized finance, pioneering on-chain financial tools. However, the rapid growth of perpetual futures has largely occurred on other platforms.
Traders now often turn to Hyperliquid or Solana for on-chain perpetuals due to Ethereum's base layer not being optimized for high-frequency, low-cost trading. According to AJ Warner, chief strategy officer at Offchain Labs, 'perps require frequent transactions, fast execution, and deep liquidity,' making them a natural fit for layer-2 platforms like Arbitrum. As decentralized perpetual exchanges mature and attract institutional attention, the distinction between Ethereum's role and that of other chains has become increasingly important. Perpetuals are one of the most demanding applications in crypto, requiring thousands of rapid updates and liquidations without interruption.
Ethereum's security-first architecture makes it an ideal settlement layer, but its block times and gas costs have historically made it expensive for latency-sensitive trading applications. The launch of GMX on Arbitrum in 2021 established a template for other perpetuals builders, who were attracted by the lower fees and faster performance. Today, much of Ethereum's perpetual trading activity takes place on layer-2 networks like Arbitrum and Base, which have reduced block times and become attractive trading destinations due to their growing user base and liquidity.
Chris Boulous of Dromos Labs argues that technical performance is only part of the story, as 'trading is effectively a network-effects business.' Protocols launch where traders already are, liquidity providers follow, and new applications build around existing liquidity. This dynamic has become self-reinforcing, with spot exchanges providing pricing, liquidity, and hedging opportunities that perpetual markets depend on.
Solana and Hyperliquid have also surged in popularity due to their ability to support high-performance trading infrastructure. According to Brian Smith of Jito, 'retail organic flow' is a crucial ingredient for any exchange platform, and Solana's large base of retail traders has given it an edge. Smith also argues that Ethereum faces an additional challenge: fragmentation. 'You need to be able to trade everything in a single spot,' he said.
'What Ethereum is suffering from is a level of fragmentation.' Ethereum's scaling strategy has relied on layer-2 networks to handle high-volume activity, but this approach has dispersed users and liquidity across multiple ecosystems. Not everyone sees this fragmentation as a fatal flaw, however. Some Ethereum proponents argue that the focus on execution misses the network's longer-term role in the on-chain financial stack.
Matthieu Saint Olive, a staff product manager at MetaMask, argues that Ethereum's role is the settlement and collateral base where the deepest liquidity, widest range of assets, and most mature DeFi primitives live. As institutions begin paying closer attention to on-chain derivatives, the conversation is shifting from whether decentralized perpetuals can work to whether they can compete with traditional infrastructure. 'It comes down to execution, custody, and predictability, not ideology,' Saint Olive said. Institutions still need deeper liquidity, more efficient capital usage, and better execution before deploying significant trading volume on-chain.
For Boulous, the next milestone is straightforward: 'You have to be able to do things on-chain that you can't do, or can't do as cheaply, in traditional markets.' While much of today's decentralized perpetual volume still revolves around crypto assets, market participants increasingly see the infrastructure supporting perps as the foundation for broader capital markets. Saint Olive believes perpetuals are already demonstrating what programmable markets can become.
'Perps are the leading indicator, the first place you can watch traditional financial activity genuinely migrate on-chain,' he said. Whether Ethereum can solve the challenges its critics point to and remain the deepest and most trusted place to settle perpetuals remains to be seen.
