Optalysys, a UK startup specializing in secure computing, has introduced the world's first server capable of processing blockchain data on a large scale without decrypting it. The LightLocker node utilizes Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), a mathematical technique that enables computations on encrypted data without compromising its security. Over the past year, several companies have explored FHE applications in the cryptocurrency space and raised funding for related projects.
Optalysys claims its server hardware is specifically designed for blockchain encryption, offering a more cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to traditional GPU-based systems, consuming 40% less energy. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Nick New and Robert Todd, Optalysys is headquartered in Leeds, England, and secured a £21 million Series A funding round in July 2023. According to CEO Dr.
Nick New, 'For blockchain technology to achieve widespread adoption, it is crucial to have infrastructure that supports confidential computing.' New further emphasized that 'Conventional hardware solutions for encrypted blockchain are expensive and inefficient, while general-purpose chips are not optimized for the unique requirements of encrypted transaction processing.'
