Zama, a leading cryptography company specializing in fully homomorphic encryption for blockchain applications, has announced the successful completion of a $57 million series B funding round, co-led by prominent investors Blockchange Ventures and Pantera Capital. This significant investment brings Zama's total funding to over $150 million, with the company now valued at more than $1 billion, earning it the distinction of being the first unicorn in the fully homomorphic encryption sector. Fully homomorphic encryption is a revolutionary technology that enables data to remain private even while it is being utilized, making it particularly valuable for sensitive applications in both blockchain and artificial intelligence.
The funding coincides with the launch of Zama's public testnet and will be utilized to drive the introduction of its mainnet, expand ecosystem adoption, and further research endeavors. The Zama protocol empowers developers to create encrypted decentralized applications without requiring in-depth cryptographic expertise.
Potential use cases span confidential stablecoin issuance, asset tokenization, private identity verification, and governance in network states, as outlined in a statement shared with CoinDesk. Additionally, the technology has applications beyond the blockchain environment, such as in healthcare and defense, where secure computation on encrypted data is increasingly vital. According to Ken Seiff, co-managing partner of Blockchange Ventures, 'Zama is commercializing a groundbreaking, next-generation technology that has the potential to redefine how confidentiality is handled in blockchain and, ultimately, in all cloud computing.' Seiff further emphasized, 'This is our third and largest investment in Zama. Since I first encountered Ethereum in 2014, I have not seen a company commercializing a new technology with such foundational potential for our global technology infrastructure.' Zama's series A round, which raised $73 million, was led by Multicoin Capital and Protocol Labs.
