Bitvavo has become the latest cryptocurrency exchange to secure a Markets in Crypto Assets License from the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets, enabling it to expand its operations across 30 European Economic Area nations. The regulatory framework, which came into effect in December last year, has prompted numerous crypto companies to apply for licenses. MiCA, introduced in 2023, aims to standardize rules across the 27 EU nations, as well as Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.
The Netherlands previously awarded licenses to four exchanges when the regulations took effect, while other platforms like OKX, Crypto.com, and Bitpanda have obtained licenses from Malta. Kraken received a license from Ireland, Coinbase from Luxembourg, and Bybit from Austria. According to Mark Nuvelstijn, CEO and co-founder of Bitvavo, the license provides the company with the clarity and confidence to achieve its goal of becoming Europe's leading digital asset trading platform.
As the largest player in the global EUR spot market, Bitvavo already held registrations in France, Austria, Italy, and Spain, in addition to its home country, the Netherlands.
