The cryptocurrency industry's primary financial backer, Fairshake, has contributed a further $1 million to the campaign of a special election candidate in Virginia, who is seeking to replace the late Democratic Representative Gerald Connolly. The candidate, James Walkinshaw, who is favored by the industry's key political action committee, emerged victorious in the Democratic firehouse primary, which was held to determine the party's chosen candidate from a field of nine contenders. The general election to formally select the next member of Congress for the Fairfax County region is scheduled to take place on September 9, with Walkinshaw holding a significant advantage due to the Democratic incumbent's strong performance in the previous regular election.

According to Josh Vlasto, a Fairshake spokesperson, 'We look forward to James joining the growing bipartisan coalition in Congress that recognizes the importance of securing America's leadership in the next generation of technology.' He also argued that the election outcome demonstrates that voters are not swayed by critics who attempt to discredit candidates who support the cryptocurrency sector and receive backing from its campaign resources. Fairshake, along with its affiliate super PACs, Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, gained prominence in the 2024 congressional elections by amassing a substantial war chest from major digital assets businesses, including Coinbase, Ripple, and a16z.

The organization devoted its campaign spending in significant amounts, often surpassing the expenditures of its chosen candidates' opponents. As a result, Fairshake successfully added numerous winners to the ranks of Congress' cryptocurrency supporters in those elections and has continued its strategy in special elections to fill vacated seats such as Connolly's. In the case of Walkinshaw, the spending came from Protect Progress, which focuses on supporting Democratic candidates. Although his former boss had consistently voted against cryptocurrency issues, Walkinshaw's campaign website states that he favors embracing the next generation of technology, including blockchain, which can help reduce administrative costs for businesses and lower fees for consumers.

The campaign website also emphasizes the need for Congress to establish modern, risk-based regulatory frameworks that support responsible innovation and prevent abuse. With approximately $116 million in reserve, Fairshake is well-positioned to continue its influence in the 2026 congressional election cycle. Current members of Congress who received support from the organization in the past are already working on major cryptocurrency bills that have been advancing this year. Fairshake makes significant 'independent expenditures' in political races, purchasing advertising without the approval or communication of the candidate, and its advertising rarely mentions digital assets, instead focusing on the most likely points to garner a win.
