Hyperliquid Revolutionizes Crypto Perpetuals in DeFi's Ecosystem
The notion that liquidity breeds liquidity has become a fundamental principle. Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange, has emerged as a top choice for traders seeking to engage with perpetual futures or 'perps,' a type of blockchain-based derivatives contract that allows users to speculate on asset prices with leverage and no expiration date. Founded by Harvard alumni Jeff Yan and a pseudonymous developer known as iliensinc, Hyperliquid launched in 2023 and has been capitalizing on its order book volume and depth by offering firms a concept akin to composability, where permissionless smart contracts can interlock like financial building blocks. The platform's Ethereum-compatible HyperEVM connects directly to its high-speed HyperCore blockchain, allowing other applications to tap into its shared liquidity without fragmenting it. As a result, applications such as wallets or other exchanges can utilize Hyperliquid as a backend to offer perps trading and other services, resulting in deeper liquidity, expanded asset variety, and compounding network effects. Hundreds of developers, including prominent names like MetaMask, Phantom wallet, and VALR, have integrated Hyperliquid's 'builder codes,' generating approximately $90 million in revenue. The platform has garnered significant praise from its growing user base. Hyunsu Jung, CEO of Hyperion DeFi, described Hyperliquid as 'the AWS for finance,' emphasizing its role as a layer-one blockchain infrastructure that provides liquidity and execution. Similar to AWS, builders own their users and control the user interface, while Hyperliquid provides the underlying liquidity and execution. The 'builder codes' allow integrators to focus on delivering a great user experience, while Hyperliquid handles the backend for liquidity and execution. For example, MetaMask, a wallet with over 100 million users worldwide, has integrated Hyperliquid's EVM module, enabling users to access perps directly from the wallet. The integration has streamlined fund transfers, allowing users to trade with the tokens they already hold. Hyperliquid handles matching, oracle, and margin engine tasks, while MetaMask focuses on providing a seamless user experience. The partnership has resulted in growth beyond crypto, with commodities and equities becoming increasingly popular. In terms of fees, MetaMask charges a flat 0.1% builder fee, with no hidden spread or execution costs. The transparency of the fee structure is seen as a major advantage. Another significant example of Hyperliquid's impact is its partnership with VALR, a large centralized exchange in Africa. Despite having built its own infrastructure, including risk and liquidation engines, VALR struggled to gain traction with its perpetual futures offerings due to liquidity and volume concerns. By integrating Hyperliquid's perps order book, VALR has been able to tap into a vast pool of global market participants, addressing its liquidity and volume challenges. Looking ahead, the growth of perps offerings from major players like Robinhood, Coinbase, and Intercontinental Exchange is expected to create opportunities for cross-venue arbitrage, according to Jung. As the market continues to evolve, Hyperliquid is well-positioned to play a vital role in shaping the future of DeFi and perpetual futures trading.
