The concept of perpetual futures has become a cornerstone of the cryptocurrency market, but according to Don Wilson, CEO of DRW, there are many misconceptions surrounding this product. In a series of posts, Wilson explained that perpetual futures, or 'perps,' are essentially futures contracts without an expiration date.

The characteristics often associated with crypto perpetuals, such as high leverage and auto-deleveraging, are not inherent to the contracts themselves but rather a result of how some crypto exchanges have chosen to implement them. Wilson emphasized that the features of perpetual futures are often misunderstood and that regulators should focus on the economic substance of these products rather than their legal labels. He argued that perpetual futures can be a valuable tool for price discovery and risk management across various markets, including commodities, securities, and cryptocurrencies.

Wilson also highlighted the benefits of digital payment rails in improving risk management and reducing transaction costs. He urged regulators to reconsider their approach to perpetual futures and to view them as a legitimate financial instrument rather than a risky crypto-specific product.
